Let’s kick off in Londonderry, where it all kicked off this week, with reports of children as young as eight throwing petrol bombs during nightly disorder. A senior policeman tells the Derry Journal that violent dissident republicans are using “low level rioting by young people” as an opportunity to target his officers.
Supt Gordon McCalmont was speaking after dissidents hit the city’s walls with automatic gunfire and threw two improvised bombs within 24 hours. At the time of going to press, Friday’s Derry Journal says petrol bombs had been thrown in the city during “five days of reckless vandalism”.
Experienced staff from the award-winning conservation specialist have joined the Clanmil team, bolstering its capacity to develop important older buildings into unique, high quality social homes.
Work is well underway on the construction of the new scheme on the site of the former Grovetree House residential home on Cullingtree Road, just off the Grosvenor Road. The project is a partnership between Clanmil Housing and the Belfast Trust and will provide 30 contemporary, high quality self-contained apartments for older people living with dementia in a supported living environment.
After much deliberation a judging panel made up of representatives from Clanmil, the Trust, and the local community have decided that when completed this Autumn the new housing scheme will be called Cullingtree Meadows, bringing together ideas suggested by Caragh McBride and Caitlin Albarando. Runner up Conor Dougan, also a pupil at the school, received a prize too.
The standard and range of names suggested has been really impressive! Being involved with the community has left us in no doubt that the people with dementia who will live in Cullingtree Meadows, will be welcomed and fully integrated into this supportive, caring community. Over the last 18 months Clanmil Housing has adopted an enhanced approach to the delivery of social value in its procurement competitions for the construction and maintenance of social housing.
All procurement contracts now include social clauses which aim to deliver real opportunities for the long term unemployed and support the development of the communities where Clanmil work. Over the past 18 months we have worked hard to ensure that our procurement contracts really deliver on social value. While this can deliver real opportunities, we wanted to go further.
We feel that a true social clause can be used to support the development of a community alongside new homes. Our intention is to deliver great homes with high design and build standards alongside community funding, community events, community training opportunities and access to employment. In this way we are achieving real social return for every pound we spend. Councillor Bloomfield welcomed the development.

Section 2 of the Republic of Ireland Act states, “It is hereby declared that the description of the State shall be the Republic of Ireland. Home-rule movement Main article: This was firstly through widespread agrarian agitation via the Irish Land League , that won land reforms for tenants in the form of the Irish Land Acts , and secondly through its attempts to achieve Home Rule , via two unsuccessful bills which would have granted Ireland limited national autonomy.
These led to “grass-roots” control of national affairs, under the Local Government Act , that had been in the hands of landlord-dominated grand juries of the Protestant Ascendancy. However, the Unionist movement had been growing since among Irish Protestants after the introduction of the first home rule bill, fearing discrimination and loss of economic and social privileges if Irish Catholics achieved real political power. In the late 19th and early 20th century unionism was particularly strong in parts of Ulster , where industrialisation was more common in contrast to the more agrarian rest of the island, and where the Protestant population was more prominent, with a majority in four counties.
Asquith introduced an Amending Bill reluctantly conceded to by the Irish Party leadership. This provided for the temporary exclusion of Ulster from the workings of the bill for a trial period of six years, with an as yet undecided new set of measures to be introduced for the area to be temporarily excluded.
